Fudgie the Whale Would Approve

August 28, 2012

Last Friday was Rich’s birthday. I knew it was going to be a good night when my ride home on the ferry provided me with this view.

I planned to take him to dinner at this cool new restaurant in our neighborhood, but our friend Rene had something even better in mind: an evening sail and a Carvel ice cream cake. We were in! I’m pretty sure it was the first time Rich got to blow out his birthday candles in front of the Statue of Liberty. Not too shabby! Thank you, Rene, for another awesome evening on the water!

That nuclear-looking thing in Rich’s hands is the cake!

Meanwhile, back on Mata Hari we’ve been getting stuff done. Rich has fashioned us a tiller out of the wood from a pallet and it’s looking pretty awesome, especially now that we’ve put a couple of coats of varnish on it.

That’s our tiller in Rich’s lap. One day soon it will be steering the boat!

Our friend Bill made us a new tiller head to connect the tiller to the rudder head. Isn’t that cool?

We’re hoping to get the whole arrangement back to the boat sometime this week so we can put it all back together and maybe even take Mata Hari out of the marina for the first time since we made the delivery up from Maryland back in May.

Did we mention we got a new fridge? The compressor on the old one doesn’t seem to want to work anymore so we just got one of those mini fridges that people have in their dorm rooms at college and it’s been working like a champ. We don’t have a nickname for it yet so suggestions are welcome. Note the beverage holder on the door that can accommodate a six-pack. I’m thoroughly impressed with that part for some reason, even though I don’t even really drink that much beer.

We’ve also been upgrading our lighting to LED bulbs. I even got to join in on the fun! Kinda frightening, no? It turns out I have a real aptitude for heating up the heat shrink tubing on the crimp connectors (well, I call it an aptitude, Rich thinks I have a tendency to almost catch everything on fire, but I’m just more efficient than he is), but am not so great at crimping. Nonetheless, we now have four fixtures with LED bulbs, which Rich claims will last for about a billion years, or at least longer than the regular bulbs. Nice!

We also managed to squeeze in a little time playing Frisbee in Liberty State Park on Saturday. We’re becoming quite the Frisbee dynamos, I must say.

In all, not a bad week. Hopefully next week we’ll have some updates on the tiller and rudder installation. Fingers crossed!
