Should the Freedom Tower’s Spire Count?

May 14, 2013

Rich’s dad was in town last week on business so we took him out for a sail. Well, it was more like a leisurely cruise around the harbor since there wasn’t any wind, but we all enjoyed basking in the warmth of the first nice evening of the season. The light was really pretty and Bruce got some great pics of the Leopard 3, a 100-foot racing boat that we all admired.

The spire had just been placed at One World Trade Center (aka, the Freedom Tower), making it officially the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere. That means it beat out the Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower) in Chicago, Bruce’s hometown, though we all agreed that it kinda seemed like cheating.

I don’t think any of us will ever get over the loss of the Twin Towers. They might not have been as shiny and pretty as the new tower, but they were iconic and even 12 years later it’s still hard to believe that they’re gone.

I suppose the builders knew they could never replace the towers……but more importantly……when are we going to start measuring this country by values that actually have some meaning? I think the “mine is bigger” theory should be replaced with an emphasis on educating our people, feeding everyone, making sure everyone has medical care….

Well, we Americans love our symbolism so being tallest means something to a great part of the population. Did you know the tower stands at 1,776 feet tall? Symbolic!

Yes, that is very American! I’m just impressed that they calculated everything out so that it’s exactly 1, 776 feet high. Let’s get out our rulers and measure it!
